Kicking Horse Coffee – Kick Ass Dark Roast Whole Bean
Now dark roast coffee may not be everyone’s favorite. But there’s a fine line between a great dark roast and a not so great dark roast. Here’s the thing, when it comes down to it it’s all about where the bean was grown and how it was roasted, and when those two stars align it makes a perfect cup of coffee!
I like to be adventurous and try out new coffees (of all types) and we stumbled upon this one particularly delicious bean on Amazon. Now personally I love a good dark roast coffee. There’s a certain body and depth that isn’t exactly found in other coffees. What intrigued me the most however wasn’t the full-bodied roasty goodness but how well it’s received by the community at large. Like I mentioned before I found this little feller on Amazon – and right off the top I noticed it had over 3,000 reviews with a 4.5 star average no less. So when I see something like that I think either someone’s fudging their stats or there maybe something to this.
Needing A Closer Look
So I wanted to investigate deeper. I purchased my bag and waited in anticipation – who doesn’t love a little anticipation! Before to long I had it, my bag of Kicking Horse Coffee – Kick Ass. Now, remember this is a Whole Bean coffee, so a great grinder is something you’re going to want to pick up if you don’t have one already. A great grinder is something every coffee lover should own!
Moving on – I ground up my KH to a more finer setting and popped it into my favorite dripper. The smell was intoxicating, you know that really awesome coffee smell you get when you walk into a great coffee bar? Or you’re walking down the coffee isle at the grocery store and it hits you just right? KH certainly delivers an extremely satisfying aroma!
At this point I was getting a bit anxious, I couldn’t wait to try it. I always like to sip my coffee first with no additions. I want to know what it tastes like nude. First thing you realize is the thick frothy foam the develops – If you’re using a thicker grain, drip coffee pot or french press your results may vary. I take my first sip and it was surprisingly good. The aroma didn’t disappoint as it signaled a equally as nice flavor.
The description on Amazon I had a little pause with – as I went back to the page the coffee was listed on I checked on the flavor note description. The company says you’ll pick up on “Sweet, Smoky, Audacious. Tasting notes-Chocolate malt, molasses, licorice and an earthy lingering finish” I’d agree with most of it except I didn’t experience any licorice (thank god) and Audacious is a word I may have substituted with – Flipping Amazing.
The bottom line is, and even though I have given this coffee high praise, Kicking Horse Coffee – Kick Ass is a solid choice for anyone looking to beef up their Dark Roast options. The aroma and flavor are great and the value for the coffee is right on par. I’d recommend KH – KA to anyone who wants to go a little outside their box and try something that may truly impress them.
Until next time, keep brewing!
